Privacy Policy
Splitify (“the app”, “we”, “us”) is a personal expense-splitting app for iOS and Android, published by an individual developer based in India. This policy explains what information the app collects, why, and the choices you have. It is written to meet the requirements of the Apple App Store and Google Play and of India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.
Who is responsible for your data
The data controller is the individual developer of Splitify. For any privacy question or request, contact: ashishmankar9@gmail.com.
What we collect and why
| Data | Where it comes from | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Name and email address | Provided by Google Sign-In (Android and iOS) or Sign in with Apple (iOS) when you create an account | To create and identify your account and show who you are signed in as |
| Authentication identifier (a user ID issued by Firebase Authentication) | Generated when you sign in | To link your data to your account and keep it private to you |
| Content you enter: group names, friend names, expense titles and amounts, and any UPI IDs you add for friends | Typed by you in the app | To calculate splits and settlements and to sync your active group across your devices |
| Shared settlement links, when you tap Share: the friend’s name, the group name, the amount owed, the UPI ID of the person being paid, and whether it is paid. When a friend opens a link and confirms who they are, their account ID is saved on it. If they tap “I’ve paid”, that request is saved too. | Created by you in the app, and by the friend when they confirm and request payment | To show a friend what they owe, let them pay you, and let you confirm payments |
| Bill-scan count (how many bill scans your account has used) | Counted by the app when a scan succeeds | To apply the free and Premium scan limits |
| Bill photo, only when the on-device reader cannot read a bill (for example handwriting) and you tap “Send photo” | Taken or chosen by you in the app | To read the items and total with Google’s Gemini model. The photo is sent over an encrypted connection, is not saved by Splitify and is not linked to your account in our database. |
| Premium purchase status | Google Play Billing (Android) or Apple’s App Store / StoreKit (iOS) when you buy or restore the one-time Premium unlock. We store only whether your account has Premium, so the unlock follows your account across devices. We never receive your payment details. | To unlock Premium features on your account |
We do not collect location, contacts, device advertising identifiers, or usage analytics. When you scan a bill, the photo is read on your device first. Only if that fails, and only after you agree (you are asked once), the photo is sent to Google’s Gemini through Firebase AI Logic to be read, and is not stored by Splitify. Google may process it under its own terms, which can allow use to improve its products on the free tier. The app links no third-party analytics or advertising software.
Information about other people
When you add a friend’s name or UPI ID to a group, you are entering information about another person. Only add details you are entitled to share, and only what is needed to split expenses. This information is visible only to you, unless you choose to share a settlement with that person (see below). It is removed when you delete the friend, archive or delete the group, or delete your account.
Sharing a settlement
You can send a friend a link to what they owe. Tapping Share saves a small note under a long random code and builds a link that contains that code. The note holds the friend’s name, the group name, the amount, the UPI ID of the person being paid and whether it is paid. Your group, your other friends and your other expenses are not part of it.
- Who can open it: anyone who has the link and signs in to Splitify. The first person to confirm “Is this you?” is linked to it, and their account ID is saved on the note. Anyone you send the link to can see that one amount and UPI ID, so send it only to the person it is for.
- Stopping: tap Stop sharing and the note is deleted, so the link stops working. Notes are also deleted when you remove the friend, archive the group or delete your account.
- The message itself: you send the link yourself, for example by WhatsApp or SMS. Those services handle the message under their own policies. Splitify does not read your messages. The web page behind the link shows no amounts and only helps the person open or install the app.
Legal basis for processing
We process your data to provide a service you have asked for (performing the contract represented by these terms) and, where applicable under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, on the basis of the consent you give by creating an account and entering data.
Service providers
Splitify relies on the following providers to operate. They process data on our behalf:
- Google Firebase (Firebase Authentication and Cloud Firestore), provided by Google LLC. Your account identity and the content you enter are stored in Cloud Firestore on Google’s cloud infrastructure. See Firebase’s privacy information.
- Google Gemini (through Firebase AI Logic), used only to read a bill photo you choose to send. See Google’s Privacy Policy.
- Google Play — Google Play Billing processes Premium purchases on Android. See Google’s Privacy Policy.
- Apple — Sign in with Apple (if you choose it) and the App Store / StoreKit for purchases on iOS. See Apple’s Privacy Policy.
- Google Sign-In (if you choose it), provided by Google LLC. See Google’s Privacy Policy.
We do not sell your personal data and we do not share it with anyone for advertising or marketing.
Where your data is stored
Data is stored using Google Firebase infrastructure and may be processed on servers located outside India, including in the United States. Where data is transferred internationally, it remains subject to this policy and to the contractual protections Google provides for Firebase customers.
How long we keep it
Your data is kept for as long as your account exists. Archived groups remain in your history until you delete them or your account. When you delete your account, all of your groups, participants, expenses, shared settlement links and your account record are permanently removed. Purchase records held by Google or Apple are governed by their own retention policies.
Deleting your account and data
In the app (iOS and Android): open the Profile screen, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account. You will be asked to confirm and to sign in once more, after which the app permanently deletes every group, friend, expense and the account itself. This action cannot be undone.
Without the app (for example, if you have uninstalled it): email ashishmankar9@gmail.com from the email address of the Google or Apple account you used to sign in, with the subject “Splitify account deletion request”. We will delete your account and all data linked to it within 30 days and confirm by reply.
What is deleted: your account record, all active and archived groups, friends (including any UPI IDs you added), expenses, shared settlement links and settings. What is kept: nothing in Splitify. Purchase records held by Google Play or the App Store remain with Google or Apple under their own policies. Deleting your account does not cancel or refund the Premium purchase; contact Google Play or Apple for refunds.
Your rights
Subject to applicable law, you may request access to the personal data we hold about you, correction of inaccurate data, or deletion of your data. Most of this is available directly in the app; for anything else, contact us at the address above. You also have the right to complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
Children
Splitify is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will remove it.
Security
Data in transit is encrypted using HTTPS. Access to your stored data is restricted by Firestore security rules so that each account can read and write only its own data. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by a new “last updated” date on this page, and where required we will seek your consent again.
